In the last four centuries scientific progress has influenced society like no other force has. The process is called ‘The Enlightenment’. A basic definition of the Enlightenment is : the replacement of the old Christian worldview by the worldview of modern science. It is a Europe-wide phenomenon, but in each of the four centuries one country is the focus and avant-garde of it :

• 17th century : The Netherlands
• 18th century : France
• 19th century : Germany
• 20th century : Britain and the US

It is a rule of thumb, there are many overlaps. My work as a historian has been mainly concerned with it. The pages of this website introduce some of my books, essays and reviews. At rare occasions I write a blog, and  finally there is a contact button.
